Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, including locations and types of dance classes. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and occasionally confusing. For instance, the mention of '185 people' is not clearly linked to a specific category, and the statement that 'the number of students are similar in ballet and modern that is approximately 300' contradicts the visual data provided in the charts. While the overview is present, the lack of precision in reporting the figures and the failure to clearly distinguish between the two charts (percentages vs. numbers) limits the clarity of the summary. More careful attention to accurately transcribing the data is required to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'Moving ahead' and 'At a fleeting glance'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the final paragraph where the comparison between ballet and modern dance is confusingly stated. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to determine which chart the student is referring to at certain points. Improving the logical flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'data has been calibrated into percentage' and 'highest value is covered by ballet'. The student relies on basic descriptors and struggles with accurate collocations related to data reporting. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or varied vocabulary prevents a higher score. Expanding the range of reporting verbs and nouns related to statistical trends would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The provided charts illustrates', 'mostly young people prefers') and awkward sentence construction ('that is location of dance classes'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 response. Greater attention to basic grammatical rules and proofreading is recommended.
