Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, including the location of dance classes and the popularity of different dance types among age groups. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the bar chart is confusing; the student refers to 'highest candle' and '300 students', which does not accurately reflect the data presented in the charts. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures and the misinterpretation of the data categories limit the effectiveness of the response. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'secondly', and 'overall'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression is hindered by unclear referencing. For example, the transition between the location data and the dance type data is abrupt. Additionally, the use of pronouns and linking words is occasionally repetitive or imprecise, which affects the overall coherence of the argument. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'highly aquired' instead of 'the most popular' or 'highest percentage', and 'colledge based studios' instead of 'college-based'. The term 'candle' is used incorrectly to describe a bar in a chart. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of academic register and the presence of spelling errors (e.g., 'battel', 'colledge') indicate a limited control over lexical items. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise reporting verbs and nouns would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('there are three types... which has 2 types', 'both of the age group have'), article usage ('a art', 'the given pie chart'), and pluralisation ('Australian young peoples'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing and comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader and demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
