IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
A pie chart along with a bar chart provide detailed data about dance classes attended by Australian town's youth. Different types of dances are compared and their locations mentioned.
Overall, we can see that the private sector is the most dominant among the possible places to practice. that a disparity in dance classes seems to occur when comparing dance types.
In fact, most of the towns youth, almost one in two persons, practices dance in private studios with a dominating 48 per centage. Followed by school halls then community halls and others with respective per centages of 24 and 18. Leaving the 10 last per cent to college-based studios.
As for different dance practices, the three types share about similar number ranging from about 800 to 900 total students. However, a disparity in the ages of participants arises in dance type. With Ballet having more, almost the double, under 11 enrollers than 11 to 16 ones. Modern dance shares a similar issue but in the opposite way by having more 11 to 16 participants. Tap dance on the other hand, has equilibrate rates almost same numbers of students in each age category.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of both charts. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the charts. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting. For example, you stated that the three dance types share a similar number of students, but the bar chart shows a clear variation (Ballet is around 800, Modern is around 900, and Tap is around 850). Additionally, the description of the age categories is slightly confusing; while you attempt to compare them, the data interpretation could be more precise. Overall, you covered the key information, but more careful attention to the specific figures is required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on location and dance types respectively. You use some cohesive devices like 'In fact', 'Followed by', and 'However' to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the start of the second paragraph. The referencing is generally clear, though the sentence structure in the overview is a bit fragmented, which slightly disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the use of linking phrases between sentences would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dominant', 'disparity', and 'equilibrate'. However, there are some awkward word choices and inaccuracies. For instance, 'per centage' is misspelled (should be 'percentage'), and 'equilibrate rates' is not a natural collocation in this context. You also use 'enrollers' to refer to participants, which is not standard usage. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'most of the towns youth' (missing apostrophe), 'that a disparity... seems to occur' (fragmented sentence), and '10 last per cent' (incorrect word order). Some sentences are also slightly awkward, such as 'With Ballet having more, almost the double, under 11 enrollers than 11 to 16 ones.' While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct word order will help improve your accuracy.
