IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart illustrates the attendance rates for different types of dance classes in different locations of a town in Australia.
Overall, the most acquired location is private studios with an estimate of 48% . School halls and community halls along with others have almost a similar percentage for location of dance classes with 24% and 18% respectively. The least used location for the purpose of dance is college based studios with only a 10%.
The different dance styles include ballet, tap and modern dance. In the under 11 category, ballet has the most number of students with around a total of 600. Tap dance is a close second with over 400 students while modern has the least attendance with just around 300. Although, a stark contrast can be seen in the age category of 11-16 with modern dance having the most students. In the age group of over 11 to under 16, there is not much change in the number of young people learning to tap dance while ballet had a significant drop with an attendance of around 300 students.
Finally, we can see from the graphs that while many children under 11 attend ballet, children from 11-16 prefer modern dance and have an attendance of around 500.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the location and dance style data. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of private studios and the shift in dance preferences between age groups. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring all data points are accurate; for instance, you mention 'college based studios' as 10%, but the chart indicates this category is 'other' at 10%, while college-based studios are 10% as well. Additionally, ensure that comparisons are more precise. While you mention the 'stark contrast' in the 11-16 age group, providing more specific comparative figures would strengthen the analysis and move the response toward a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets (location and dance styles). Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Finally', and 'Although' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the location data and the dance style data is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the graphs') is consistently clear will enhance the overall cohesion of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'attendance rates', 'stark contrast', and 'significant drop'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'the most acquired location', which is not the most natural collocation for describing a venue. You also use 'most number of students', which is slightly redundant. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'with only a 10%' (should be 'at 10%') and 'the most number of students' (should be 'the highest number of students'). Additionally, the sentence 'Although, a stark contrast can be seen...' is punctuated incorrectly as 'Although' should not be followed by a comma in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures. Increasing the variety of sentence types and proofreading for minor errors will help improve your score.
