Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given pie-chart and bar chart depict the location and kinds of dance classes that young people attend in a particular town of Australia, respectively.

By taking a general overview, it is evident that the majority of dance classes are being held in private studios. Ballet is most popular among children under 11 years of age, whereas, it is attended least by children of 11-16 years of age. Completely opposite from this pattern, modern dance is attended by the majority of children from the age group of 11-16 years old and it is least popular among children under the age of 11 years.

Almost half of the dance classes are being held in private studios with the precentage of 48%. Followed by school halls where after-school rehearsals are done with 24%. Community halls and others contribute to 18% of the dance classes. The least precentage is of college based studios with merely 10%.

The most attended dance type by children under the age of 11 years is Ballet with 600 students. Only half of this number of students are enrolled in ballet by the age group of 11-16. Modern dance type includes around 500 students who are 11-16 years old. However, the number of children under 11 years of age observe a decline by around 200 students as compared to 11-16 years age group. Lastly, around a same number of students from both the age groups are enrolled in Tap dance classes, being around 450 for both the categories of children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided relevant comparisons between the age groups. The overview is clear and highlights the key trends effectively. You have included data to support your points, which is essential for Task 1. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, your description of the modern dance figures for the under-11 group is slightly confusingly phrased. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of the location and dance type preferences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme (location and dance type). You use cohesive devices such as 'By taking a general overview', 'Followed by', and 'However' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the progression from general trends to specific data points is logical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'private studios', 'rehearsals', and 'enrolled' accurately. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'precentage' (repeated), which should be 'percentage'. While your vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the task, incorporating a wider variety of synonyms for 'popular' or 'attended' would enhance the lexical range. The word choice is generally precise enough to avoid ambiguity, and the errors present do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'around a same number' (should be 'about the same number') and 'the number of children... observe a decline' (subject-verb agreement error: 'observes'), these do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation is generally good. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, showing a reasonable level of grammatical control for this task.
