The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 9.0)

The charts illustrate where young people in an Australian town attend dance classes and compare the different types of dance classes chosen by two age groups: under 11 and 11–16.

Overall, private studios are by far the most popular venue for dance lessons, while college-based studios account for the smallest proportion. In terms of dance styles, younger children tend to prefer traditional classes such as ballet, whereas older students are more interested in modern styles.

Almost half of all dance classes (48%) are held in private studios, making them the leading location. School halls used for after-school activities represent the second most common venue, accounting for 24% of classes. Community halls and other locations together make up 18%, while only 10% of classes are conducted in college-based studios.

Regarding the types of dance classes, ballet is the clear favourite among children under the age of 11, attracting significantly more participants than any other style in this age group. In contrast, teenagers aged 11 to 16 show a stronger preference for modern dance, with hip-hop also proving highly popular. Meanwhile, jazz attracts a fairly similar number of students in both age groups, suggesting that it appeals to children and teenagers alike.

In conclusion, private studios dominate as the main location for dance classes, while preferences for dance styles vary noticeably according to age, with younger children favouring ballet and older students choosing more contemporary forms of dance.
