Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the prompt but lacks a clear overview of the main trends. While it mentions some data points, the selection of information is somewhat disjointed and fails to provide a cohesive summary of the charts. The description of the data is often confusing, such as the reference to 'maturity' and the unclear phrasing regarding which age groups are 'dominating'. To improve, you should clearly identify the most significant features—such as the popularity of ballet in private studios versus tap dance in schools—and provide a clear, concise overview paragraph that highlights these main trends without simply listing individual percentages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is weak. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'there' and 'however'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different locations and age groups. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'furthermore', 'consequently') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows logically into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'distinct loacation', 'most younger ones', and 'least area'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology for describing charts, such as 'proportion', 'predominant', 'account for', and 'the majority of'. Additionally, ensure you proofread for basic spelling errors, as these detract from the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with frequent errors in structure and syntax. For example, 'its showing 18% of dance classes for where maturity is for the 11 to 16 age group' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures before attempting more complex ones. Ensure that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using prepositions correctly when describing data points in charts.
