IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart and the bar graph illustrate the places where dance classes took place and the varieties of dance classes by age group in one Australian city.
Overall, most of the classes are organised in private studios, and there are twice as many children under 11 participating in ballet as children between 11 and 16 years.
In terms of location, out of four different locations, private studios are considered the most popular ones, with 48% occupancy, and School halls are twice as less popular than the private studios, with 24%. On the other hand, community halls and others contributed to 18% and college-based studios, which are the least popular place, with just 10%.
When it comes to the dancers participating in different dances, children under 11 years old taking ballet classes contributed to the highest participation by far. Children between the ages of 11 and 16 were the highest in the modern dance classes, with about 520 students. Whereas children under 11 years old and between 11 and 16 years old contributed to the same number, with 300 students each. When it comes to the dance category tap, there are minimal differences in the number of participants in both age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided a clear overview. You selected relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the 48% occupancy for private studios and the specific participation numbers for ballet. However, the comparison of the dance categories could be more precise. For instance, when discussing the 'same number' of students, it is unclear which dance category you are referring to, as the graph shows different numbers for different styles. Ensure that your data reporting is always explicitly linked to the specific category to avoid ambiguity. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'On the other hand', and 'When it comes to' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two different charts. While the flow is generally good, some transitions could be smoother; for example, the shift between the location data and the dance participation data is a bit abrupt. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner with clear progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'occupancy', 'participating', and 'minimal differences'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'School halls are twice as less popular'. A more natural way to express this would be 'half as popular as'. You avoid repetition and maintain a formal tone suitable for an Academic Task 1 report. The vocabulary is adequate to communicate your points clearly without any significant errors that impede understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy reading. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the least popular place, with just 10%', where a verb is missing, and the phrasing 'twice as less popular' is grammatically incorrect. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally good, showing a level of accuracy consistent with a solid band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.
