Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given chart illustrates the data on the location and types of dance classes young citizen are participating in Australia.

Overall, Private studios accommodate the largest proportion of young citizen, whereas the least number of participants are recorded in college-based studios. There are five types of dance classes in total, with the majority of young people preferring ballet to both tap and modern dance.

In comparison, 48% of children select private studios as the better location for their practice, while only 10% and 18% of individuals attend classes in college-based studios and community halls, respectively. In addition, a higher proportion of people aged under 11 choose to learn ballet and tap dance, whereas those aged 11 and over show a preference for modern dance. Among children under the age of 11, ballet is the most popular dance class, with approximately 600 students, whereas tap and modern dance attract fewer participants, at roughly 450 and 300, respectively. In contrast, among those aged 11–16, modern dance is the most popular, with just over 500 students. Meanwhile, the corresponding figures for tap and ballet are approximately 420 and 300 students, respectively.

Therefore, modern dance is the most popular among the children aged 11 to 16, while the ballet dance attracts the people under 11.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response effectively identifies and reports the main features of the charts. You have successfully highlighted the key trends regarding studio locations and the age-related preferences for dance styles. The comparisons between the two age groups are clear and supported by the provided data. However, the summary could be improved by ensuring all data points are integrated more fluidly. For instance, the final paragraph is somewhat redundant as it repeats information already stated in the body. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and relevant data selection.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In comparison,' 'In addition,' and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the location data from the age-related dance preferences. While the flow is generally good, the final paragraph feels slightly disconnected from the rest of the text, acting more as a summary of what was already discussed rather than adding new insight or concluding the analysis. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas remains clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'accommodate the largest proportion' and 'show a preference for' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'young citizen' (should be 'young citizens' or 'young people') and 'the ballet dance' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here). While you use some precise terminology, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'popular' or 'attract' to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear, and the meaning is never in doubt. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'young citizen are participating' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the ballet dance attracts the people' (unnecessary article). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the use of commas to separate clauses is handled well. While there are occasional errors, they are non-systematic and do not impede communication. To improve, focus on pluralization and article usage to ensure greater precision in your writing.
