Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given pie chart illustrates the location of the dance class people of young age from a city in Australia are currently enrolled in. While the bar graph gives the information about types of dances attended by two age groups, under 11 and between 11 and 16.
Overall, the highest portion of young people are enrolled in private studios and the lowest in college-based studios; similarly, most of the children under 11 were learning ballet, while those between 11 and 16 are learning modern dances.
From the pie chart, it could be noted that 48% of individuals are learning dance from a private tutor. While nearly a quarter of the childrens are learning from school, similarly 18% of the childrens are learning from community halls and only 10% from college.
Similarly, the bar graph shows that about 600 teenagers and 300 children under 11 were learning ballet. Whereas tap dance is famous between both ages, as over 400 students of both age categories are learning it. But for modern dance moves, it is more famous in the 11 to 16 age group, while only 300 students under 11 are learning this.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided relevant comparisons. The overview clearly highlights the key trends, such as the preference for private studios and the age-related differences in dance styles. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you stated that 600 teenagers were learning ballet, whereas the chart indicates the figure is closer to 500. Additionally, the term 'childrens' is grammatically incorrect and should be 'children'. To improve, ensure you double-check your data transcription against the visual aids to ensure complete accuracy, as precise reporting is essential for a higher band score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'while', 'similarly', and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, the use of 'similarly' at the start of the third and fourth paragraphs is slightly repetitive and does not always accurately reflect the relationship between the ideas being presented. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two charts. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'individuals', and 'categories'. However, there are some issues with word choice and form, such as the repeated incorrect pluralization 'childrens' (the plural of child is children). You also use 'famous' to describe dance styles, where 'popular' or 'preferred' would be more appropriate in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensure you are using the correct plural forms of nouns. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'learning' or 'attending' would also enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While nearly a quarter of the children are learning from school, similarly 18%...'. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues and the incorrect use of 'childrens'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the highest portion of young people are enrolled in private studios'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical errors and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed with precision.
