IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by the young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.
Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer investing their time in going to private studios rather than public classes. Besides, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form, throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.
In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% love to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.
Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in age group of 11-16. Besides, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 attendance, and 300 under the age group of 11. On the other hand, every age group of children loves to participate in tap, more than 400 in all age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table, providing relevant comparisons. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring the data points are consistently accurate; for instance, you mention 'growth' in attendance for ballet, but the chart provides a snapshot of current attendance rather than a trend over time. Additionally, ensure that the figures cited are precise to the data provided to maintain a high level of accuracy in reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, moving from an overview to specific details about locations and then dance types. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'In stark contrast', and 'Delving deeper' to guide the reader. While the paragraphing is effective, some transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'breakdown', 'witness', and 'significant'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'investing their time in going to' which is slightly wordy, and 'throughout the period' which is not applicable as the data is not longitudinal. However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'account for', 'constitute', or 'predominant'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the most significant growth in attendance' (when the data is static) and 'in age group of 11-16' (missing an article). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that your verb tenses accurately reflect the nature of the data provided (i.e., using present tense for static data).
