Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by the young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time in going to private studios rather than public classes. Besides, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form, throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.

In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% love to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.

Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in age group of 11-16. Besides, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 attendance, and 300 under the age group of 11. On the other hand, every age group of children loves to participate in tap, with the average of 400 participation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You have successfully highlighted the dominance of private studios and the popularity of ballet. The comparison between age groups is also well-handled. However, there is a minor issue with the interpretation of the data: you mention 'growth' in attendance for ballet, but the chart provides a snapshot of current attendance rather than a trend over time. To reach a higher band, ensure that the language used reflects the static nature of the data provided. Overall, the response is clear and covers all requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two distinct data sets. Cohesive devices such as 'In detail,' 'In stark contrast,' and 'Delving deeper' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the location data from the dance type data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the overview provides a concise summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, such as 'breakdown,' 'witness,' and 'significant.' There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'dedicating their time in going to' (dedicating their time to attending) and '300 under the age group of 11' (300 in the under-11 age group). While these do not impede communication, refining these phrases would elevate the lexical quality. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic report, and you avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free. There are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'most of the youth prefer dedicating their time in going to' and 'the average of 400 participation' (an average participation of 400). Punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring that prepositional usage and noun-verb agreement are consistent. The current level of control is good, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
