The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by the young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time to going to private studios rather than public classes. Besides, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form, throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.

In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% prefer to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.

Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in the age group of 11-16. Besides, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 attendance, and 300 under the age group of 11. On the other hand, every age group of children loves to participate in tap, with an average of 400 participation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview and selected key features from both the pie chart and the table. The comparisons are relevant, such as noting that private studios are the most popular location and contrasting the attendance figures for different dance forms. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific percentages and student numbers supports your points well. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt, as the mention of 'throughout the period' is slightly inaccurate given the data is a snapshot rather than a trend over time.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In stark contrast', and 'Delving deeper' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the location data from the dance form data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent, and the information flows well from one point to the next, making the report easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'breakdown of types', 'witness the most attendance', and 'significant growth' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. While there are minor issues with collocation, such as '300 under the age group of 11' (which could be phrased more naturally), the vocabulary is consistently appropriate for an academic report. The range is adequate to express the data clearly without repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar and punctuation is generally good. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students', which lacks a verb to connect the clause, but these do not impede communication. You have successfully used comparative structures and prepositional phrases to describe the data. The grammatical accuracy is high enough to support clear communication throughout the task.
