Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time to going to private studios rather than public classes. Besides, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form , throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.

In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% prefer to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.

Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in the age group of 11-16. Besides, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 participants, and 300 under the age group of 11. On the other hand, every age group of children loves to participate in tap, with an average of 400 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table, providing a clear overview and supporting details. You made relevant comparisons, such as noting that private studios are the most popular location and highlighting the age-related trends in dance forms. The information is accurate based on the provided data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories; for instance, when discussing 'growth' in ballet, ensure the distinction between 'growth' and 'current attendance' is clear, as the chart shows current figures rather than a timeline of growth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the location data from the dance type data. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In stark contrast', and 'Delving deeper' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. The structure is coherent, and the information flows well from one point to the next, making the report easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'witness the most attendance', 'stark contrast', and 'breakdown of types' are used effectively. There is an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there are minor instances where word choice could be more sophisticated, such as 'loves to participate', which is slightly informal for an academic task. Overall, the range is adequate to allow for flexibility and precision in describing the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with good control. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are occasional minor slips, such as the unnecessary space before the comma in 'dance form , throughout' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'most significant growth in attendance' when describing static data. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. You show a good grasp of grammar, and the variety of structures used is sufficient to support the clear presentation of the data.
