IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time to going to private studios rather than public classes. Furthermore, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.

In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% prefer to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.

Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in the age group of 11-16. Furthermore, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 participants, and 300 in the age group of 11. On the other hand, every age group of children loves to participate in tap, with an average of 400 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies and reports the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You have successfully highlighted the key trends, such as the preference for private studios and the popularity of ballet. The comparisons made between locations and age groups are relevant and well-supported by the data. However, the report could be improved by ensuring all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt. For instance, the mention of 'throughout the period' is slightly vague as the prompt does not explicitly define a time period. Overall, you have provided a clear overview and sufficient detail to satisfy the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme (location vs. dance type). The progression of ideas is smooth, and you make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Meanwhile,' and 'On the other hand.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct data sets. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the two body paragraphs is slightly more seamless, perhaps by explicitly stating that the second paragraph shifts focus from location to dance types.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'breakdown,' 'witness,' and 'participants.' There is an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. For example, instead of 'most popular,' you could use 'predominant' or 'favoured.' The word choice is generally natural, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor issues, such as the phrasing 'most significant growth in attendance,' which is slightly imprecise when describing static data from a table. Additionally, ensure subject-verb agreement remains consistent, such as in the sentence 'only around 10% of children tend to attend.' Overall, the grammatical control is good, and errors are rare and do not interfere with the clarity of the report.
