IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.
Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time to going to private studios rather than public classes. Furthermore, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.
In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% % prefer to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.
Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in the age group of 11-16. Furthermore, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 participants, and 300 under the age group of 11. On the other hand, every age group of children loves to participate in tap, with an average of 400 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively identifies and reports the main features of the charts. You have successfully highlighted the key trends in location preferences and dance types, providing relevant data to support your points. The overview is clear and captures the essence of the data. However, the analysis of the dance types could be more precise; for instance, you mention 'growth' in attendance for ballet, but the chart is a snapshot of current attendance, not a time-series graph, so 'growth' is an inaccurate term. Additionally, ensure all data points are accurately transcribed, as the comparison between age groups could be more explicitly linked to the provided figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by category (location vs. dance type). You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'In stark contrast', and 'Delving deeper' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two distinct datasets. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, although some transitions between sentences could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow between the specific data points provided.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'witness the most attendance', 'stark contrast', and 'breakdown of types' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which adds to the academic tone. However, there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'growth' to describe static data. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations related to data interpretation, such as 'proportion', 'predominant', or 'marginal'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the control of punctuation is generally good. There are occasional minor slips, such as the double percentage sign ('24% %') and slightly awkward phrasing in the final paragraph ('every age group of children loves to participate'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The use of comparative structures is accurate, and the grammatical control is consistent throughout the text.
