Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time to going to private studios rather than public classes. Furthermore, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.

In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24% prefer to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second lowest location in Australia.

Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in the age group of 11-16. Furthermore, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 participants, and 300 in the age group of under 11. On the other hand, every age group of children prefers to participate in tap, with an average of 400 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, there are some inaccuracies in your interpretation of the data. For instance, you mention 'ballet has the most significant growth' and 'throughout the period', but the prompt does not indicate a time series or growth over time; it is a snapshot of current attendance. Additionally, stating that tap is attended by 'all age groups' is a slight over-generalization, as the data specifically categorizes two distinct age groups. To reach a higher band, ensure your analysis strictly adheres to the data provided without inferring trends that are not present.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the location data from the dance type data. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'In stark contrast', and 'Delving deeper' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related information. The progression of ideas is clear, though some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is sound and supports the flow of information well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your points clearly. Phrases like 'witness the most attendance', 'in stark contrast', and 'breakdown of types' are appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'most significant growth' when describing static data, and 'tend to attend' which is slightly redundant. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but ensure that the terms used are precise and accurately reflect the nature of the data provided in the charts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy reading. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'illustrate the information on the location... and the breakdown of types', where the phrasing is slightly clunky. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your control over grammar is consistent throughout the response. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or conditional clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
