The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the information on the location of dance classes in a town in Australia attended by young people, and the breakdown of types of dance forms practiced.

Overall, it can be observed that most of the youth prefer dedicating their time to going to private studios rather than public classes. Furthermore, it is clear that ballet is the most popular dance form throughout the period. Meanwhile, tap is attended by all age groups.

In detail, private studios witness the most attendance with approximately 48% of the total. Meanwhile, less than one-third of children, around 24%, prefer to attend dance classes in their own school halls after school hours. In stark contrast, college-based studios are the least popular and only around 10% of children tend to attend. In addition, publicly available community halls have only 18% attendance in total, marking the second-lowest location in Australia.

Delving deeper, ballet has the most significant growth in attendance, almost 600 students under the age of 11, which is double the number of children in the age group of 11-16. Furthermore, the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by 11-16 year-olds with 520 participants, and 300 in the age group of under 11. On the other hand, every age group of children prefers to participate in tap, with an average of 400 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You have successfully highlighted the most popular location (private studios) and the most popular dance form (ballet). The comparisons are generally clear, such as contrasting the popularity of private studios with college-based studios. However, the analysis of the table could be more precise; for instance, you mention 'growth' in attendance for ballet, but the data provided is a snapshot of current attendance, not a trend over time. Additionally, ensuring all data points are accurately represented—such as clarifying the total numbers versus percentages—would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by chart type. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In stark contrast', and 'Delving deeper' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the location data from the dance type data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the response. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs is even more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'witness the most attendance', 'in stark contrast', and 'breakdown of types' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which adds to the clarity of the report. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, some minor refinements in collocation would enhance the sophistication of your writing. For example, 'significant growth' is not the most accurate way to describe static data. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have maintained good control over grammar and punctuation, with very few errors that impede communication. Most sentences are error-free, and the use of complex structures, such as 'while the modern dance form is enjoyed the most by...', is handled well. There are occasional minor slips, but these do not detract from the overall clarity of the message. To improve further, focus on ensuring that subject-verb agreement and preposition usage remain consistent throughout more complex sentences.
