The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The charts show the locations where young people in an Australian town attend dance classes and the types of dance classes they take, divided into two age groups.
Overall, private studios are the most popular place for dance classes, while college-based studios are the least common. In terms of dance styles, ballet is the favourite among children under 11, whereas modern dance is more popular with those aged 11–16.
Looking at the locations, almost half of all dance classes (48%) are held in private studios. School halls account for 24%, making them the second most common venue. Community halls and other locations represent 18% of classes, while only 10% take place in college-based studios.
Regarding the types of classes, around 600 children under 11 attend ballet classes, compared with about 300 students aged 11–16. Tap dance is also popular in both age groups, attracting approximately 450 younger students and just over 400 older students. In contrast, modern dance is the least popular choice among children under 11, with about 300 students. However, it is the most popular style for the 11–16 age group, with slightly more than 500 participants.
In conclusion, private studios are the main location for dance classes, and there is a clear difference in dance preferences between the two age groups, with younger children preferring ballet and older students choosing modern dance.
