Student answer (Band 6.5)

This pie chart and bar graph provide information about the location and types of dance classes currently popular among the young people in an Australian town. In general, it is observed that kids under 11 are highly inclined towards ballet dance, whereas kids between 11 and 16 are mostly attending modern dance classes. In contrast, private dance studios accounted for the largest proportion in dance class location.

Nearly 520 students are attending modern dance classes, making it the most in-trend dance class among individuals aged under 11 to 16. 430 students of the same age are enrolled in tap dance. However, ballet dance classes have the lowest number of young people aged between 11 and 16, but it has nearly 600 kids under 11 enrolled, making it the most attended dance class in all categories. Consequently, modern dance is the least attended class by under 11 students, followed by 420 students aged below 11 in tap dance classes.

In contrast, private studios accounted for 48%, which is the largest proportion of dance class location. School and community halls stood next, with 24% and 18% of the total proportion, respectively. However, college-based studios were reported to have the lowest proportion of dance class location.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided relevant comparisons. You clearly highlighted the age-related preferences for dance types and the distribution of locations. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting of the data. For instance, you state that 520 students are attending modern dance classes, but the chart indicates this figure represents the 11-16 age group specifically, not the total. Additionally, your overview is slightly confusing; stating that 'kids between 11 and 16 are mostly attending modern dance classes' is accurate, but the subsequent sentence about private studios feels disconnected from the main trends. Ensure that your overview synthesizes the most significant trends rather than just listing isolated facts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into three paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', and 'Consequently' to link ideas. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the dance types and the location data could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally effective, though the connection between the two charts could be more explicitly stated to improve the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'highly inclined towards', 'accounted for the largest proportion', and 'enrolled in' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'most in-trend', which is not standard academic phrasing. You also repeat the word 'proportion' several times when referring to the location data. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'percentage' or 'share' and avoid informal phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the lowest proportion of dance class location' (should be 'locations') and 'kids' (which is slightly informal for an academic report; 'children' or 'young people' is preferred). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your control over complex structures is sufficient to avoid any significant communication issues.
