IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart illustrates the distribution of venues for dance classes. In contrast, the bar chart displays the participation of two age groups (under 11 and 11–16) across three different types of dance classes in an Australian town.

According to the pie chart, nearly half of all dance classes take place in private studios (48%). The second most frequent venue is school halls, making up 24%, which is exactly half the proportion of private studios. Community halls and other venues represent 18%, while college-based studios host the fewest classes at just 10%.

Ballet attracts the highest overall participation among students under 11, with 600 attendees. In contrast, only 300 students aged 11–16 participate in ballet.

Modern Dance displays the inverse pattern of ballet. It is predominantly favoured by the 11–16 age group (approximately 520 students), compared to 300 children under 11.

Tap Dance demonstrates the smallest disparity between age categories, with roughly 450 younger children and 425 older students enrolled.

Overall, private studios are by far the most common location for dance classes, whereas college-based studios account for the smallest share. Regarding dance styles, ballet is the most popular choice among children under 11, while modern dance attracts the highest number of students in the 11–16 age bracket. Tap dance shows relatively balanced popularity across both age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart, providing clear comparisons between the age groups and the dance styles. The overview provided at the end is concise and highlights the key trends, such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related preferences for ballet and modern dance. The data is accurately reported, and the comparison between categories is well-handled. To reach a higher band, you could aim to integrate the data more fluidly rather than listing figures, perhaps by grouping similar trends more explicitly in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a summary overview. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'According to', and 'while', which help to link the information effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The flow between sentences is smooth, and there is no evidence of repetitive or mechanical referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information precisely, such as 'distribution', 'proportion', 'disparity', and 'bracket'. The language is natural and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the vocabulary used allows for a clear and accurate description of the data. To move towards a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items to describe trends, such as 'predominantly', 'marginal', or 'a significant shift'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and accurate use of comparative forms. The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent throughout the text. There are no grammatical slips that impede communication. You have successfully combined simple and complex structures to maintain a formal tone. The accuracy is high, and the sentence variety is sufficient to keep the reader engaged without any noticeable strain.
