IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart given displays information about the location of dance classes the youth in Australia are attending, whether that may be in private studios, college-based studios, school halls, community halls or other places. Additionally, the bar chart provides extra information about the type of dance classes taken (ballet, tap, or modern).

Overall, the overwhelming majority of participants attended their lessons in private studios as opposed to the minority that chose to learn in college-based studios. Amongst those under the age of 11, modern dance was the most popular, whereas kids ranging from the ages of 11 to 16 preferred ballet over tap and modern.

Whilst almost half of the attendees opted for practicing their dance in private studios, nearly a quarter actually attended dance lessons in the school halls after school hours. Only about 18% practiced in community halls and other areas, followed by the least popular studios based in colleges with only a tenth of the total vote.

Regarding kids under the age of 11, modern dance amassed great popularity attracting about 525 students, but ballet only attracted a total of 300 people. Conversely, modern dance was unpopular amongst older kids between 11 to 16 years old with only 300 attendees, whereas ballet gained the greatest attention overall with approximately 600 pupils. Tap dance was almost equally popular in both age groups, accommodating between 425 students to 450.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the prompt. You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided relevant comparisons between the locations and the age groups. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends, such as the preference for private studios and the age-related differences in dance styles. Data is used accurately to support the points made, such as the specific figures for modern and ballet dance across the two age groups. The information is well-selected and logically presented, meeting the requirements for a high-level summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the location data, and the age-related dance preferences. Cohesive devices such as 'Whilst', 'Conversely', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. There is a clear sense of structure that guides the reader through the data without any confusion or mechanical repetition.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'overwhelming majority', 'amassed great popularity', and 'gained the greatest attention' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there are minor opportunities to use more precise academic collocations to reach the highest band. The word choice is consistently clear and contributes to the overall readability of the report, with no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('Whilst almost half...', 'Regarding kids under the age of 11...'). The grammar is generally accurate, with only very occasional minor slips. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over complex structures is consistent throughout the text. This level of accuracy and range is indicative of a strong command of English grammar.
