IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The rendered pie chart gives information about the location of dance classes and the number of students of different age groups involved in different types of dance classes.

Overall, it can be seen that most students prefer private studios to practice dance. Furthermore, ballet is popular among young students, and modern dance is more popular among teens.

Evidently, it is quite apparent that 48% of the market share is held by private studios. In contrast, college-based studios hold only 10% of the market. In a similar context, community halls and other holds only 8% more than college-based studios which is 18% only. School halls hold way large proportion as community hall and school halls.

Moving on further, over 600 young students were involved in ballet. Whereas, there are only 300 teens in ballet dance. However, over 500 of teens were enrolled with modern dance. Strikingly, the number of teens and the number of young students of ballet and modern dance are the same 300 students. Lastly, there is a slight difference in the number of students in tap dance, where teens are 400 and young student are slight more than 400.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both charts, identifying key trends such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related differences in dance styles. However, the analysis of the data is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the statement 'the number of teens and the number of young students of ballet and modern dance are the same 300 students' is confusing and does not clearly reflect the data provided. Additionally, the comparison of 'school halls' and 'community halls' is slightly muddled. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are reported with greater precision and that comparisons are logically structured to highlight the most significant differences rather than listing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific details. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast', 'Moving on further', and 'Strikingly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when comparing the proportions of different locations. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the data points more fluidly, rather than relying on simple sequential markers.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'market share', 'enrolled', and 'proportion' used correctly. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'other holds only 8% more' and 'way large proportion'. The phrasing 'young students' is used repeatedly, which limits the lexical variety. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms for describing trends and proportions, and ensure that the terminology used to describe the data is accurate and natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'community halls and other holds only 8%' (subject-verb agreement) and 'young student are slight more' (missing adverb/adjective form). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure occasionally lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of comparative adjectives will help improve the overall accuracy of the writing.
