Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the pie chart and bar graph. You successfully identified the main features, such as private studios being the most popular location and the contrasting trends in dance types across age groups. However, the analysis is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. For example, you list the percentages for locations one by one rather than grouping them to highlight the dominance of private studios compared to the others. To improve, focus on synthesizing the data—grouping the 'minor' locations together—to provide a more concise overview. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, as it restates points already made in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a summary. You use some cohesive devices like 'At first', 'However', and 'Similarly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'After that' and 'comes in with the least percentage'. Additionally, there is a sentence fragment at the end of the second paragraph ('While the tap dance contains the similar') which disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring every sentence is complete will help achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'stake', 'accounted for', and 'inverted'. However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'the sort of dance classes was attended' is grammatically awkward, and 'largest stake of location' is not the standard way to describe statistical data. Using 'proportion' or 'share' would be more precise. There is also some repetition of the word 'location' and 'count', which limits the sophistication of the response. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and statistical nouns will improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('School halls contains', 'tap dance have') and awkward passive constructions ('was accumulated by'). There are also punctuation and phrasing errors, such as the sentence fragment at the end of the second paragraph and the misuse of 'which' in 'inverted. which is'. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentences to avoid these recurring errors.
