Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the most popular locations and the trends in dance classes by age. However, the overview is somewhat disjointed, and the reporting of data is inconsistent. For instance, the description of the bar chart is fragmented, and the data points are not always clearly linked to the categories. While the key information is present, the lack of a clear, cohesive summary of the trends makes it difficult to follow. To improve, ensure that the overview provides a clear, high-level summary of the main trends rather than just listing categories, and ensure all data points are accurately and clearly presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps the reader navigate the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'then' and 'after that'. The transition between the two charts is abrupt, and the logical progression of ideas is hindered by awkward phrasing and sentence structure. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which data point belongs to which category. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with several spelling errors such as 'mainifested', 'commemity', and 'mordern'. The student relies on basic terminology and struggles with precise collocations, such as 'highest young people attending'. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but it is often used incorrectly or in an unnatural way. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more varied and precise vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'predominant', 'account for', or 'fluctuate', and pay closer attention to spelling and word choice accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('there are some locations... were take place'), article usage, and sentence fragments. The sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors that impede clarity. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of symbols like '&' and '@' which are inappropriate for an academic task. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and work on reducing errors in tense and pluralization.
