The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given two charts depict the data on the location and categories of dance classes young individuals are attending currently in a specific town of Australia.

Overall, it is clear that the most dance classes are organised in private studios and ballet has the most number of students.

The most percentage of dance classes are arranged in private studios, which is almost half of the total percentage(48%), while the least proportion accounts for college-based studios. 24% dance classes are arranged in School halls and community halls and other see 18%.

600 students of under 11 aged are joining ballet mostly, which has the most number of students as compared to other dance types, whereas 11-16 aged group people are attending modern dance classes, the figure is more than 500. Ballet has 300 students of 11-16 aged and modern has the same number of under 11 youth individuals. Tap has the similar number of both aged students, it is between 400 and 450.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both charts, identifying the most popular locations and dance types. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the bar chart lacks precision; stating that tap has a number 'between 400 and 450' is vague when the data could be interpreted more accurately. Additionally, the comparison between age groups is slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the categories and that comparisons are more analytical rather than just listing figures. The overview is present but could be more comprehensive by highlighting the most significant trends across both charts more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure for this task. There is a clear progression of ideas, moving from the location data to the dance type data. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'The most percentage' and 'The figure is' are used repeatedly, and the transition between the two charts could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion within the second paragraph is slightly weak, as the sentences feel like a list of observations rather than a cohesive analysis of the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the information presented. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'most dance classes are organised' instead of 'the majority of dance classes' and '11-16 aged group people' instead of 'the 11-16 age group'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To improve, you should aim to use more precise terminology for describing data trends, such as 'predominant', 'account for', or 'fluctuate', rather than relying on basic descriptors like 'most' or 'number of'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'The most percentage of dance classes' is grammatically incorrect; 'The highest percentage' would be more accurate. There are also issues with article usage and word order, such as '11-16 aged group people'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of adjectives and nouns will help improve your accuracy.
