Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, including the location of dance classes and the types of dance by age group. However, the presentation of data is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between age groups for the dance types is slightly confusing due to the way the data is presented. The response would benefit from a more integrated approach to comparing the two age groups rather than listing figures in isolation. Overall, it addresses the requirements of the task but lacks the depth of analysis expected for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on location and dance types. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive or slightly awkward, such as 'After that' and 'On the other hand' used in quick succession. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is occasionally imprecise, which makes some sentences feel disjointed. Improved use of linking words and better paragraph transitions would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'spot and kinds of dance classes', 'ruling location', and 'less use place'. The student relies on basic terminology and struggles with collocations. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice that prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise academic vocabulary would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('ballet type of dance are', 'modern dance are'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction ('300 learners are 11-16 age are participating'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence structure, article usage, and ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects. More attention to proofreading for these common errors is recommended.
