Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the charts, including the most popular location (private studios) and the age-related trends in dance styles. You have provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the charts. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two age groups rather than listing them separately. For instance, noting that while ballet is the dominant choice for the younger group, it becomes the least popular for teenagers would have strengthened the analytical quality of the report. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the data (locations vs. dance types). Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'In terms of', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the third paragraph, 'Community halls and others, and college-based studios' is slightly clunky, and the connection between sentences could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'proportion', and 'engage'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Private studios are cover' (should be 'cover') and 'less likely to joint' (should be 'join'). Additionally, 'children under 11 children' is a repetitive error. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more varied reporting verbs and precise collocations for data description would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'are more interested to participating' should be 'are more interested in participating', and 'are not popular location' should be 'are not popular locations'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Increasing your control over complex structures and proofreading for basic grammatical slips will help improve your accuracy.
