Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of both charts, identifying the most popular locations and dance types. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the description of the age groups in the second paragraph is confusing; the text mentions 'half of tweens are teenagers', which is logically impossible given the categories. Furthermore, the data interpretation lacks precision in places, such as the vague reference to 'community halls and others'. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons between categories are clearly articulated without contradictory statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. Phrases like 'In addition to' (which is grammatically incomplete) and 'Thirdly' are used in a way that feels forced. The progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between the location data and the age-related dance data is abrupt. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would significantly enhance the flow of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'dependent at private dance classes' and 'college-based studios classes'. The student attempts to use specific terminology related to the charts, but word choice is often imprecise (e.g., 'section' used to describe dance types). Spelling errors like 'sch0oll', 'onlt', and 'rspectively' are present, though they do not severely impede communication. A wider range of collocations and more accurate word choices would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Ballet dance were popular', 'teenagers who likes this section') and incorrect preposition usage ('dependent at', 'popular for'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar structures limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional phrases will help improve clarity and accuracy.
