IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts illustrate the location and types of dance classes youngsters in Australia are currently preferring based on their age groups (below 11 and 11 to 16). From an overall perspective, it is apparent that private studios are most common among young individuals while Ballet and Modern dance types are most popular dance types among two different age groups.

Regarding the location of the dance classes, private studios are primary preference as 48% of the young population prefer going there, followed by school halls, community halls & other and college-based studios standing at 24%, 18% and 10%, respectively.

Secondly, students in types of dance are divided into two age groups; one under 11 years and other between 11 to 16 years. Ballet is the most popular type of dance among the former group as around 600 of its students are practicing it, while Modern dance is highly preferred by the latter one as nearly 520 of its students are practicing it. Tap dance has a mediocre popularity as it has students from both the age groups in the range of 420 and 460.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both charts. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the charts. However, the comparison of the dance types could be more precise. For instance, you mention 'mediocre popularity' for Tap dance, but the data shows it is actually the most popular dance type for the under-11 group (approx. 460) and the second most popular for the 11-16 group (approx. 420). Your analysis of the age groups is accurate, but ensure you consistently use the data to support your comparisons rather than using subjective descriptors like 'mediocre'. Overall, you covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'Secondly', and 'while' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the two charts could be smoother. The use of 'Secondly' to introduce the second chart is a bit mechanical. Additionally, some referencing could be improved; for example, in the phrase 'the latter one', it is clear, but the flow could be enhanced by using more varied linking phrases to show the relationship between the data sets. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct charts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'primary preference', and 'practicing'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'youngsters' which is slightly informal for an academic report, and 'students in types of dance are divided', which is a bit awkward. You successfully use numerical data to describe trends, which is essential for this task. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and proportions, such as 'constitute', 'account for', or 'a significant proportion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'are most popular dance types among two different age groups' (missing 'the') and 'one under 11 years and other between 11 to 16 years' (missing articles). Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. You show good control over punctuation and sentence structure, which allows for a smooth reading experience. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement in more complex sentences.
