The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the distribution of dance class locations attended by young people in Australian town, while the bar chart compares enrollment across three styles of dance ( Ballet, Tap, and Modern) divided into two age groups: under 11 and 11 to 16.

Overall, private studios serve as the primary venue for dance classes, catering to nearly half of all students. Furthermore, clear age preferences exist regarding dance styles, with younger children favoring ballet and older students preferring modern dance.

Regarding venue locations, private studios dominate at 48%, followed by after school halls at 24%. Community halls and other spaces account for 18%, while college based studios comprise the remaining 10%

In terms of dance categories, ballet is the most widely taken style among children under 11, significantly outstripping participation from the 11 to 16 cohort. Conversely, modern dance shows the opposite trend, attracting the highest number of students in the 11-16 age range while seeing far fewer younger participants. Tap dance maintains steady interest across both age groups, with modest participation from both groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected key data points to support your summary. The comparison between the two charts is logical, and the distinction between age groups and dance styles is well-articulated. You have successfully identified the dominant venue (private studios) and the contrasting preferences for ballet and modern dance. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully accurate; for instance, ensure that the percentages mentioned align precisely with the visual data provided in the prompt. Overall, the information is well-selected and clearly presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used an effective structure, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then two body paragraphs that group information thematically. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Regarding', 'In terms of', and 'Conversely' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two distinct charts. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the different pieces of information is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'distribution of dance class locations', 'catering to', 'significantly outstripping participation', and 'maintains steady interest' show a good command of academic language. There is a clear awareness of style and collocation. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. The spelling is accurate, and the word choice is consistently appropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of participial phrases ('divided into two age groups') and contrasting clauses ('while the bar chart compares...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is strong. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence patterns, such as using more passive voice constructions or varied subordinating conjunctions to describe the data trends even more fluidly.
