Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie and bar chart illustrate the information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending. The data is measured in percentages in the pie chart.

Overall, the highest proportion of the location of dance classes are presented by the private studios, while college-based studios account for the smallest proportions. In the bar chart, the under 11 age group learns mostly the ballet dance, whereas the 11 to 16 age group interests in the modern dance.

To begin with, in the pie chart, private studios stand at 48% which was the largest percentage for location of dance, follows by school halls, at below a quarter. Community halls and other account for 18%. However, college-based studios have a minimal percentage (10%).

Turning to bar chart, the ballet dance is popular among the under 11 age group and it is around 600 students. Having said that, the 11 to 16 age group mostly likes the modern dance and it consists of more than 500 students. Tap dance shows equal number of students prefer from both of the age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main features. You successfully identified the dominant location (private studios) and the primary dance types for each age group. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, when mentioning that school halls are 'below a quarter', stating the exact figure (24%) would be more accurate. Additionally, the description of the bar chart data is slightly imprecise; you mention 'more than 500 students' for modern dance, but the chart shows a specific value that could be read more accurately. Overall, the main trends are well-selected and presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Turning to', and 'However' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two charts. While the flow is generally good, some transitions are slightly mechanical. For example, 'Having said that' is used in a context where a simple contrast like 'In contrast' or 'Conversely' would be more natural. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the data points could be tightened to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'account for', and 'minimal percentage'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'interests in the modern dance' (should be 'is interested in' or 'shows an interest in') and 'prefer from both' (should be 'preferred by both'). While you successfully convey the information, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', or 'represent' to avoid relying on the same structures throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the highest proportion of the location of dance classes are presented' (subject-verb agreement error: 'proportion' is singular) and 'the ballet dance is popular' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here). Additionally, 'which was the largest percentage' uses an inconsistent tense; since the data is current, present tense should be maintained. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
