IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the locations of dance classes attended by young people in an Australian town, whereas the bar chart gives data about attendance of participants in these classes by type.

Looking first at the pie chart, there was a significant difference in the proportion of dance classes held at various locations in the town, with nearly half of the classes being private studios accounting for 48%, doubling the percentage of school halls where students attend after school. In contrast, only 18% of classes are held in community halls and other venues. College-based studios have the smallest percentage of dance classes, at around 10%.

Turning to the bar chart, ballet is the most favored with children under 16, as 600 students learn this dance. This is followed by tap dancing, with 450 individuals. Modern dance has the lowest number of participants, reporting only half the number of participants compared to ballet. For youngsters aged between 11 and 16, there is an opposite trend with people under 16, while modern dances attract the most attention, with over 500 participants. The rate of tap dancing learners closely follows those of modern dancing, about 450, whereas ballet is the least common group.

Overall, private studios are the most popular location for classes, as opposed to college-based studios which are the least favorite. In addition, people under 11 tend to engage in ballet classes, while most of the teens aged from 11 to 16 learn modern dance.

The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have successfully identified and reported the main features of both the pie and bar charts. The comparison between the two age groups (under 11 and 11-16) is clearly articulated, and the data is used accurately to support your points. You have provided a clear overview of the key trends, such as the popularity of private studios and the shift in dance preferences between age groups. The information is well-selected and logically presented, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the pie chart to the bar chart, and concluding with a summary. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Looking first at', 'In contrast', 'Turning to', and 'In addition'. These transitions help the reader follow your argument smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'significant difference', 'proportion of dance classes', 'favored', and 'opposite trend' show a solid command of language. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or precise collocations to reach the highest band. For instance, instead of 'smallest percentage', you could use 'minimal proportion'. The word choice is consistently clear and contributes to the overall readability of the report without any noticeable errors in spelling or word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as 'with nearly half of the classes being private studios accounting for 48%'. Your control over grammar and punctuation is strong, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. You successfully manage comparisons using both simple and complex structures. To aim for a higher band, ensure that all comparative structures are perfectly balanced, such as ensuring consistent tense usage when describing the data. Overall, the grammatical accuracy is high.
