Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the bar chart. Key features are identified, such as the highest proportion of dance locations (private studios at 48%) and the age-related trends in dance types. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary statement that synthesizes the data. While the main features are reported, the comparison between the two charts could be more explicit. The data is generally accurate, though the description of the bar chart could be more concise to avoid listing every single data point, which can sometimes detract from the 'overview' requirement of Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into two distinct paragraphs, which is appropriate for the two charts provided. There is a logical progression from the location data to the age-group data. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on transitions like 'Then', 'After that', and 'At last'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases or referencing techniques to connect the ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more sophisticated to better guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the charts clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'proportion', 'illustrates', and 'participating'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'college based studios' or 'modern form' (which likely refers to 'modern dance'). The range is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, though 'groul' is a noticeable error.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people participates', 'proportion of people attend', '24% of people goes'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. The use of articles and prepositions is occasionally inconsistent (e.g., 'going at community halls'). While the student attempts to use complex structures, the control over these is inconsistent, leading to the aforementioned errors. More attention to basic grammatical rules would improve the accuracy of the writing.
