Student answer (Band 7.0)

Grammar: 1

The charts illustrate information about various types of dance classes, their locations and the number of people attending them in a town in Australia.

Overall, private studios and school halls were the most commonly used locations for dance classes. In addition, Ballet recorded the highest number of students aged under 11, whereas Modern dance accounted for a greater number of students aged between 11 and 16.

An analysis of the pie chart reveals that private studios recorded 48% of dance classes, making them the most commonly used location. School halls accounted for 24% of dance classes, which is the second most preferred location. Moreover, the figure for community halls and other locations recorded 18% of dance classes. In contrast, college-based studios represented the smallest proportion of dance classes, at 10%.

From the bar chart, it is evident that Ballet recorded 600 students under the age of 11, whereas it recorded 300 students aged between 11 and 16. Similarly, Tap dance was attended by approximately 450 students under 11, compared with around 420 students aged between 11 and 16. In contrast, Modern dance was more popular among students aged between 11 and 16, with approximately 520 students, while 300 students were recorded as being 11.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of both charts. You have successfully identified the most popular locations and compared the age-related trends in dance classes. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. You have included relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the 48% for private studios and the specific student numbers for Ballet and Modern dance. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully integrated; for instance, you could explicitly contrast the total popularity of dance types if the data allowed, but your current approach is accurate and well-focused on the key information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the distinct charts. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly' effectively to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the location data from the age-related data. The referencing is clear throughout, making the text easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs remains seamless, though your current structure is already very effective for a Task 1 response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for', 'represented the smallest proportion', and 'recorded the highest number' are used accurately. You avoid repetition by using varied reporting verbs and structures. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for an academic report, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to data description (e.g., 'constituted', 'a marginal difference', 'predominant') would elevate the response. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choice is consistently appropriate for the context of describing statistical charts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with good control. Most sentences are error-free, and your use of comparative structures ('whereas', 'while', 'compared with') is grammatically sound. There is a minor slip in the final sentence where you wrote '300 students were recorded as being 11' instead of 'under 11', but this does not impede communication. Your punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety helps maintain the reader's interest. To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or participle clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
