IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The information displays types of dance classes currently held in a town in Australia by young people.

Overall, first there is the discussion about the location of dance classes that people attend. As we see that in private sector the percentage is so high as compared to other locations most of the people prefer to attend classes at that location and their percentage is 48%.

School halls are then used for dance classes after school and 24% public attend that class. After that 18% of people attend classes at community halls and others while remaining attend classes in college-based studios which are 10%.

After that in the below the table or graph illustrates the information about the age of the young people who attend which types of dance classes. In Ballet, around 600 students whose age is below 11 take most of part in it and around 300 students whose age is between 11 to 16 take part in the ballet dance. Same as that the number of students whose age is less than 11 take more chance in tap dance as compared to others and at least in modern dance, the students whose age is between 11 to 16 take more part in that type of dance which is approximately 520 and under 11 years old students take least part in it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both charts, identifying the private sector as the most popular location and noting age-related trends in dance styles. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the age groups is repetitive and lacks a clear comparative structure. The data points are mentioned, but the synthesis of information—such as highlighting the clear preference for Ballet among the younger cohort compared to the older one—could be more analytical. While all parts of the task are addressed, the lack of a clear overview statement that synthesizes the trends across both charts limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical. The use of transition phrases like 'After that' and 'Same as that' is repetitive and lacks variety, which hinders the logical progression of the text. While the information is generally easy to follow, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the data points and the overall trend is weak. The paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the two distinct charts more clearly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. The student relies on basic phrasing such as 'percentage is so high', 'take most of part', and 'take more chance'. There is little attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'predominant', 'account for', or 'fluctuate'. While the meaning is clear and communication is not impeded, the lack of variety in word choice and the occasional awkward collocation (e.g., 'take more chance in tap dance') prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect preposition usage ('in the below the table'), awkward phrasing ('whose age is below 11 take most of part in it'), and subject-verb agreement errors. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on sentence construction and ensuring that complex structures are used accurately rather than just attempted.
