Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of both charts, identifying the most popular locations and comparing dance types across age groups. However, the reporting of data is occasionally inaccurate or confusing. For example, the statement that 'the total number of ballet class for under 11 are around 600' is difficult to verify against standard interpretations of such charts, and the comparison of tap dance figures is unclear. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in data reporting and some confusing comparisons prevent this from reaching a higher band. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the age groups, which makes the progression of ideas feel somewhat repetitive and forced. Better use of linking words to show contrast or addition would improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'art form of dance' and 'the number of students are practice'. The repetition of 'classes' and 'number of' indicates a limited range. While the meaning is generally clear, the student struggles to use less common vocabulary effectively, and there are minor errors in word choice that occasionally make the text sound unnatural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'The pie chart and bar graph illustrates' (should be 'illustrate') and 'the number of students are practice' (should be 'are practicing'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
