IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates data on the location of dance classes and the bar diagram depicts the kinds of dances that are presently attended in a town by the Australian young children.

Overall, private studios are the most popular places for dance classes. Ballet is the most attended class and is particularly the most popular dance form among kids below 11.

Private studios are the most favourite location for dance classes, with almost half of the young people. Students attend dance classes after school in the halls, which accounts for nearly one-fourth. Community and other halls have roughly one-fifth participants, whereas the college-based studios remain the least popular, with just 10%.

Ballet is the most liked dance form among the children aged below 11, with around 600, whereas this is the least preferred among the students aged between 11 to 16. The modern dance class presents an opposite scenario, with most students being in the age group 11-16 and kids under 11 liking it the least. Classes for tap dance have nearly similar figures for both age groups, with the kids under 11 leading by a small margin.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview and successfully selected and reported the main features from both the pie chart and the bar chart. Comparisons are made throughout, such as contrasting the popularity of ballet between the two age groups and noting the opposite trend for modern dance. The data is accurately represented, and the key trends are highlighted well. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully integrated into the narrative flow rather than just listing them, though your current approach is already quite strong and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two distinct charts. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'with almost half', and 'in contrast' to link information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the location data from the dance type data. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the information without difficulty. The flow is natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Phrases like 'presents an opposite scenario' and 'accounts for nearly one-fourth' are used effectively. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to elevate the response further. For instance, instead of 'most liked' or 'most favourite', you could use 'predominant' or 'preferred'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choices are consistently clear and relevant to the context of the charts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'with almost half of the young people' and 'whereas the college-based studios remain the least popular'. The grammar is generally accurate, with only minor slips, such as 'Australian young children' which sounds slightly unnatural; 'young people in Australia' would be better. Punctuation is handled well, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control over complex structures is sufficient to support clear communication of the data.
