Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the location of dances and the bar graph shows the type of dance that young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Overall, most attendees on the dance classes are listed as teenagers and half of them prefer classes by private studios.

Dancers under 11 years old are mostly in the ballet class which is composed of 600 students, then the other 450 students are seen in tap dance classes, and the modern dance class is composed of 300 students. While the dancers between ages 11 and 16 prefer modern dance class in which there is a total of more than 500 students, and in the tap dance class they are composed of more than 400 students while ballet class has 300 students.

It was recorded that 48% of the young people chose private studios as the location of their dance class, while the other 24% students prefer school hall to be able to practice after-class. Furthermore, 18% of teenage dancers prefer the community halls, and 10% of chose college-based studios.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both charts. You successfully identified the main features, such as the preference for private studios and the age-related differences in dance styles. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; stating that 'most attendees... are listed as teenagers' is a generalization not fully supported by the data, which includes children under 11. Additionally, the comparison between age groups could be more analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just listing data points, and ensure your summary of the data is precise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two charts. Cohesive devices such as 'While', 'Furthermore', and 'It was recorded that' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences in the third paragraph could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the age groups and the specific dance types could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'composed of', and 'recorded'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'most attendees on the dance classes' (should be 'in') and '10% of chose' (grammatical error). While you use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'prefer' or 'composed of' and ensure collocations are natural, such as 'attend dance classes' rather than 'attendees on the dance classes'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'most attendees on the dance classes are listed as teenagers' (awkward phrasing) and '10% of chose' (missing noun). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted complex sentences, but the control over them is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy and allow for a more sophisticated grammatical range.
