The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportions of dance classes held in different locations, while the bar chart compares the number of students attending three types of dance classes in two age groups in a town in Australia.

Overall, it is clear that private studios accounted for the largest proportion of dance class locations, whereas college-based studios represented the smallest share. Additionally, ballet was more popular among children under 11, while modern dance attracted the highest number of students aged 11–16.

Looking first at the locations, private studios accounted for the largest proportion, at 48%, followed by school halls at 24%. Meanwhile, community halls and other locations represented 18%, while college-based studios had the smallest share, at 10%.

Turning to the types of dance classes, ballet was significantly more popular among children under 11, with approximately 600 students, compared to around 300 students aged 11–16. Similarly, about 450 younger students attended tap classes, while the figure for the older group was slightly lower, at just over 400. In contrast, modern dance was more popular among students aged 11–16, with around 520 participants, compared with approximately 300 children under 11.
