IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart illustrates where young people in an Australian town attend dance classes, while the bar graph compares three types of dance classes across two age groups: under 11 and 11 to 16.
Overall, private studios were the most popular location by a clear margin, and preferences for dance style varied noticeably by age, with younger children favouring ballet and older students favouring modern dance.
Looking at the pie chart, almost half of all dance classes, 48%, took place in private studios. School halls were the second most common venue, accounting for 24%, followed by community halls and other locations at 18%. College-based studios made up the smallest share, at just 10%.
Turning to the bar graph, ballet was by far the most popular class among children under 11, with around 600 attending, compared to only 300 in the 11–16 age group. Tap dance showed a more even split between the two groups, at roughly 450 and 420 respectively. Modern dance followed the opposite pattern to ballet: only around 300 younger children attended, compared to approximately 520 in the older age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have provided a very strong response that fully addresses all parts of the task. You successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the bar graph, providing a clear overview and supporting your points with accurate data. The comparison between the two age groups in the bar graph is particularly well-handled, highlighting the contrasting trends in ballet and modern dance effectively. The report is concise, focused, and meets all the requirements for an Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear structure. You have used an effective introduction, a summary paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group information logically by chart type. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'followed by', 'turning to', and 'in contrast' are used naturally to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different datasets, and the progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data description task. Phrases like 'by a clear margin', 'accounting for', and 'followed the opposite pattern' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately to describe trends and proportions. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms for 'popular' or 'common' could elevate the response further, but the current usage is natural and error-free.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used throughout the response. You effectively use subordinate clauses and comparative structures to convey information clearly. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence, with almost all sentences being error-free.
