IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart illustrates the proportions of dance classes held at different locations, while the table compares the numbers of young people aged under 11 and those aged 11–16 who attended three different types of dance classes in an Australian town.
Overall, private studios were by far the most common venue for dance classes, whereas college-based studios accounted for the smallest proportion. In terms of the types of dance, ballet was the most popular among children under 11, while modern dance attracted the highest number of participants in the 11–16 age group.
Private studios accounted for 48% of all dance classes, making them twice as common as school halls, which represented 24%. Community halls and other locations together made up a further 18%, while only 10% of classes were held in college-based studios.
Turning to participation by age, approximately 600 under-11s attended ballet classes, compared with around 450 who took tap and 300 who participated in modern dance. The pattern was quite different among 11–16-year-olds. Modern dance was the most popular option, with slightly more than 500 participants, followed by tap dance at approximately 420. By contrast, ballet attracted only 300 participants in this older age group.
Overall, therefore, younger children showed a clear preference for ballet, whereas older children were considerably more likely to choose modern dance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected and reported key features from both the pie chart and the table. The comparisons between the two age groups are well-integrated, such as noting the shift in preference from ballet to modern dance. The data is accurately represented, and the inclusion of specific figures supports your observations well. The response is well-structured and meets the requirements for a high-level summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction and overview to specific details about locations and then age-related participation. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in terms of', 'turning to', and 'by contrast' are used effectively to link ideas and guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different datasets, ensuring the information is easy to follow and the overall structure is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for the smallest proportion', 'attracted the highest number of participants', and 'showed a clear preference' demonstrate a good command of language appropriate for an academic report. The vocabulary is natural and fits the context well. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the range is flexible enough to describe the data accurately without repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully employed a variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while modern dance attracted...') and comparative structures ('making them twice as common as...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, contributing to the overall clarity and professional tone of the report.
