IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and the bar chart illustrate a proportion of the location and the type of classes offered to the young people in Australia.

Overall, the pie chart demonstrates that the private studios with dance classes are more prevalent in this area . Meanwhile, the minors under 11 years are more interested in the ballet than the tap and the modern dance classes.

The pie chart depicts that a proportion of the private studios is the highest with 48 % , followed by the school hall with 24%, then the community halls and the college-based studios with the least percentage.

The bar chart compares the number of students with a different age group (under 11 years and between 11-16 ) attending the ballet, the tap and the modern dances.

The 600 children under the 11 year are participating significantly in ballet dances and only the 300 minors are taking part in the modern dance classes.

However, the 500 or a bit more young people with an age ranging from 11-16 are involved in the modern dance classes which is considerably higher than those engaging in the ballet and the tap dance classes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided relevant comparisons. You clearly highlighted the dominance of private studios and the age-related preferences for specific dance styles. However, the report could be improved by ensuring more precise data reporting. For instance, you mention 'the community halls and the college-based studios with the least percentage' without providing the specific figures (17% and 11% respectively). Additionally, the description of the bar chart data is slightly imprecise; for example, stating '500 or a bit more' is vague when the chart provides specific values. To reach a higher band, ensure all key data points are accurately represented and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on each chart. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'However', and 'followed by', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between sentences can sometimes feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two charts. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother, particularly when moving from one data point to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prevalent', 'participating', and 'engaging'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'illustrate a proportion of the location' (which is slightly inaccurate) and 'the 600 children under the 11 year' (which is grammatically awkward). You rely on basic descriptors for data. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and proportions, and ensure that your word choices are natural and contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the ballet', 'the tap', 'the modern dance') and pluralization ('the 11 year', 'the 300 minors'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the 500 or a bit more young people'. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles and ensure subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you move into the higher band range.
