IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the given two charts compare the information about dance classes are held and the types of dances yound people in an australia town attend, divided into two age groups.
overall, private studios are the dominant location for dance classes, while ballet is most popular among children under 11 and modern is favoured by the 11-16 age group.
according to the pie chart, almost half of all dance classes, at 48% take place in private studios. school halls hosting after-school classes account for 24%, followed by community halls and other venues at 18%. college-based studios represent the smallest share at only 10%.
the bar chart shows that ballet has the highest total enrolment, but with a strong age bias. around 600 children under 11 attend ballet classes, double the number of 11-16 year olds, who number about 300. tap dance is more evenly distributed, with approximately 450 students under 11 participate. therefore, interest in ballet declines with age, while interest in modern dance increases

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies and reports the main features of both charts. You have provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the pie and bar charts. You made effective comparisons, such as noting the age bias in ballet versus the more even distribution of tap dance. However, the analysis of the bar chart is slightly incomplete; while you mention ballet and tap, you do not explicitly reference the data for modern dance or hip-hop, which are key features of the second chart. To reach a higher band, ensure all significant categories are addressed to provide a comprehensive summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on each chart. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'overall', 'according to', and 'therefore', to link your points. However, the transition between the two body paragraphs could be smoother, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the data points more fluidly and ensure that the relationship between the two charts is explicitly highlighted.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'dominant location', 'enrolment', and 'evenly distributed'. There are some minor issues with word choice and phrasing, such as 'the given two charts compare the information about dance classes are held', which is grammatically awkward. While you use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, aim to use a wider variety of synonyms and more precise collocations to describe trends and data fluctuations, avoiding repetitive sentence structures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'dance classes are held' (should be 'where dance classes are held') and '450 students under 11 participate' (should be 'participating'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'yound' (typo) and 'australia'. The errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
