IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts illustrate dance class venues and enrolment by age group. At a glance, private studios and Ballet dominate overall.
Nearly half of students attend classes in private studios (48%), followed by school halls (24%), community halls (18%), and college-based studios (10%).
Regarding dance types, Ballet is the most popular choice for children under 11, drawing 600 students, compared to just 300 in the 11–16 age bracket. Conversely, Modern dance is dominated by older students, with over 500 participants aged 11–16, whereas under-11s account for roughly 300. Tap dance demonstrates the most balanced attendance between both groups, attracting just over 400 younger children and exactly 400 older students. Overall, dance preferences vary significantly by age.
Overall, private studios serve as the primary venue for the dance classes, while younger children show a clear preference for Ballet, and older students overwhelmingly favor Modern dance, leaving Tap relatively balanced between age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by selecting and reporting the main features of both charts. You have successfully identified the dominant venue (private studios) and highlighted the key trends in dance preferences across age groups. The comparison between the under-11 and 11–16 age brackets is clear and supported by the provided data. However, the response is quite concise. To reach a higher band, you could provide more detailed comparisons, such as noting that while Ballet is the most popular for younger children, it experiences a significant drop in popularity among older students, whereas Modern dance shows the opposite trend. The overview is present, but could be more integrated into the structure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the venue data to the dance type data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these two distinct sets of information. You use cohesive devices such as 'Conversely' and 'while' to link ideas, which helps the flow. However, the final paragraph is somewhat repetitive, as it restates information already covered in the body paragraphs without adding new insight. Improving the transition between the overview and the body, and ensuring that the conclusion synthesizes rather than just summarizes, would enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'dominate overall', 'balanced attendance', and 'significantly' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good. To improve, try to avoid repeating the same sentence structures and vocabulary. For instance, instead of repeating 'students' or 'age groups' multiple times, you could use synonyms like 'participants', 'youngsters', 'the younger cohort', or 'the older demographic'. This would show a more flexible and precise control of lexical resources.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('whereas under-11s account for...'). The grammar is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is handled well throughout the text. To move into the higher bands, you should aim for a greater variety of complex structures, such as using passive voice to describe the data (e.g., 'It is observed that...') or more varied introductory phrases to improve the sophistication of your sentence construction.
