The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts show information about the locations of dance classes and the number of students in three types of dance classes in two age groups.

Overall, private studios are the most common location for dance classes. In terms of dance types, ballet is most popular among children under 11, while modern dance has the highest number of students aged 11–16.

Looking at the first chart, 48% of dance classes are held in private studios, making this the largest proportion. School halls account for 24%, while community halls and other places make up 18%. Only 10% of classes are held in college-based studios, which is the smallest percentage.

The second chart shows clear differences between the two age groups. Among children under 11, around 600 students attend ballet classes, compared with about 450 for tap and 300 for modern dance. For the 11–16 age group, approximately 300 students choose ballet, while about 420 attend tap classes. Modern dance is the most popular in this group, with roughly 520 students
