IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart compares the location where young people in Australia under 11 until 16 years old are attending. On the other hand, the bar graph illustrates the proportion of students enrolled for ballet, tap and modern dance .
Overall, private studios is the most dominant location for the dance classes whereas college studios is the least favorite location. On the one hand, majority of the young people under 11 are attending ballet dancing while those aged 11 to 16 are more keen on modern dancing.
Regarding the dance classes location, private studios make up the largest share at almost 50% making it the most desired dance location. In contrast, studios based on college accounts for the lowest figure of 10% identifying it as the least favorite location to attend dance classes to. Approximately a quarter of the students are keen to attend dances at School halls, while community halls and other location contributes 18%.
Turning to the types of dance classes, ballet attracts approximately 600 students under the age of 11, twice the figure for those aged 11 to 16, at around 300. The opposite pattern can be observed for modern dance, which is attended by just over 500 older students, compared with roughly 300 younger participants. Tap shows the smallest difference between the two groups, with approximately 450 students under 11 taking classes, slightly more than the figure of just over 400 among 11- to 16-year-olds.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of both charts and provided relevant comparisons. You clearly highlighted the dominant location (private studios) and the contrasting preferences for dance types between the two age groups. The data is accurately reported, and the overview provides a clear summary of the trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with complete precision; for example, when mentioning 'other location', it would be beneficial to specify the exact percentage if possible, or ensure the grouping is clearly defined. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two distinct charts. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Turning to', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'studios based on college' which is slightly awkward. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct data sets, which helps the overall flow. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'proportion', 'dominant', and 'participants'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'studios based on college' instead of 'college-based studios' and 'least favorite location to attend dance classes to' (the final 'to' is redundant). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to data reporting, such as 'account for a significant proportion' or 'the figures for... stand at'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The opposite pattern can be observed for modern dance, which is attended by...'. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('private studios is' should be 'private studios are') and awkward phrasing ('under 11 until 16 years old'). Punctuation is generally correct, though there is a stray space before the period in the first paragraph. The errors do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex structures would elevate the score.
