Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of both the pie and bar charts. You successfully highlight the most popular location (private studios) and compare the age groups across the three dance types. However, the analysis is slightly hindered by inaccuracies in reporting data; for instance, you state that 'more age group under 11 attended the Ballet and Tap than 11-16', but the bar chart shows the 11-16 group for Tap is actually slightly higher than the under 11 group. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed with absolute precision and that comparisons are clearly supported by the figures provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific charts. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'According to', and 'Regarding', which helps the flow of information. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the shift between the pie chart and bar chart analysis could be smoother. Additionally, there are some referencing issues, such as 'this group attended almost similar', which makes the connection between sentences slightly unclear. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'accounted for', and 'greatest number'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'stood up 48%' (should be 'stood at') and 'more age group 11-16 interested in' (missing the verb 'were'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more accurate prepositions and ensuring that verbs are correctly paired with the data being described.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'The provide charts illustrate' (should be 'provided'), 'it can seen' (missing 'be'), and 'the students of under 11 was' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur consistently. To achieve a higher band, you need to focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that passive voice constructions are formed correctly. Increasing the number of error-free sentences is the primary goal for improvement.
