IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two diagrams provide a data regarding type of dance classes for children and adolescents and where they take place in an Australian town.
Overall, the pie chart shows a variety of different locations of dance classes and almost half of the classes are being held in private studios. The types of dance classes are being recorded in the line chart, showing three kinds of dances including ballet, tap, and modern dance as well as the age group of the attendees. The most popular dance class amongst children under 11 is ballet whereas most of the 11-16 year olds are participating in modern dance class.
Aside from private studios, there are other places where classes take place. Almost a quarter of these lessons are being conducted in school halls as an after-school activity. The rest of the lessons can be joined either in community halls or college-based studios.
Out of all of the classes being shown in the diagram, tap dance holds approximately 400 participants ranging from children under 11 years old up to 16 year olds. Ballet classes are the most popular amongst children under 11 with 600 of the students are recorded to be within that age group while 300 students are within the age range of 11 to 16 years old. Interestingly, modern classes attract the older age group with more than 500 of them are a part of these classes and 300 of them are children who are younger than 11.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the prompt by summarizing the main features of both charts. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the popularity of private studios and the age-related preferences for specific dance styles. The comparisons between age groups and dance types are clear and well-supported by the data provided. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, ensure the distinction between the total number of participants and the specific age-group breakdown is consistently accurate. Overall, the report is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information thematically. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Aside from,' 'The rest of,' and 'Interestingly' to link your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the location data from the dance type data. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the flow between sentences could make the text feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'after-school activity' and 'ranging from' are used appropriately. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'being' and 'shown.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'account for,' 'constitute,' or 'predominate.' While your word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication, increasing the variety of your lexical items would elevate the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips, particularly with subject-verb agreement and passive voice construction, such as '600 of the students are recorded to be' and 'more than 500 of them are a part of these classes.' These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on refining your control over complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent verb tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
