IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion of the location of dance classes distributed in four areas ( community halls and other, private studios, school halls, college-based studios). The bar graph compares the popularity of types of dance classes from all three types (Ballet, Tap, Modern) among two age groups namely: under 11 and 11-16.
Overall, it is evident that the private studios accounted for the highest proportion of total pie chart, while college-based studios represented the lowest percentage. The bar graph shows that under 11 group usually preferred to take ballet classes, whereas 11-16 aged group commonly got modern dance classes.
Regarding the location of dance classes, private studios experienced largest proportion at 48%. In contrast, the college-based studios accounted for lowest percentage of about 10%. The proportion for community halls and others and school halls usage was 18% and 24% respectively.
It is represented in the bar graph that, around 600 under 11 grouped students got ballet dance classes. However, nearly 300 were interested in modern classes. In contrast, 11-16 grouped students were commonly getting modern dance classes about 520, while nearly 300 got ballet dance classes. The number of students interested in Tap dance classes were approximately 450 and 410 for under 11 and 11-16 aged groups respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the bar graph. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the charts. The comparison between the two age groups is well-handled. To reach a higher band, ensure that your comparisons are more integrated; for example, instead of listing figures for each group separately, you could contrast them more directly within the same sentence. Overall, you have covered all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the location and the types of dance classes respectively. The progression of ideas is clear. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In contrast' and 'However' effectively. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases further and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural, as some sentences currently feel slightly mechanical in their structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'distributed', and 'popularity' correctly. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'got' and 'represented'. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and data, such as 'accounted for', 'constituted', or 'predominated'. Your spelling is accurate throughout, and your word choices are generally appropriate for the context of a data summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as '11-16 aged group commonly got modern dance classes' (should be 'the 11-16 age group') and 'The proportion for community halls and others and school halls usage was' (which is slightly clunky). Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the errors present do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate your score.
